With so many incredible styles to choose from, how do you know which model is right for you? To help your mattress shopping journey, here are some of our best tips for selecting the perfect mattress:
Review Your Sleeping Position – As you begin your mattress search, consider the position that you typically sleep in: back sleeper, side sleeper, stomach sleeper, or combo sleeper. Your sleeping position will help you determine the type of support you need, as well as the ideal firmness level of your mattress with level 1 being the softest and level 10 being the firmest. Matching your sleep position to your mattress will make a big difference in how you feel in the morning!
If you sleep mostly on your back, you want a mattress to help keep the spine in a neutral, even alignment and to alleviate tension across your back. For a side sleeper, the perfect mattress will be gentle enough to provide deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. A stomach sleeper should look for an ultra-supportive mattress that helps lift the hips to prevent dealignment with the rest of the spine. Combo sleepers need a balance of support and pressure relief to provide comfort for different positions.
Review Your Body Type & Weight – It’s extremely prudent to factor in the weight and body type of the person you are mattress shopping for. A lighter sleeper or 150 lbs. or less will generally prefer a softer mattress since sinking is less of an issue. Average-sized sleepers between 150 lbs. and 200 lbs. will look for a balance of comfort and support layers from a mattress, in ratio to the preferred feel. Heavier sleepers from 200 lbs. and up should prioritize thicker comfort and support layers within the mattress to provide ideal comfort and firmness. By matching the proper weight and body type to your mattress, you can better ensure the perfect sinkage, hug, feel, cooling, and support for your sleep needs.
Consider the Ideal Mattress Material – Now it’s time to put your info to use! If you need high-pressure relief at your shoulders, hips, and lower back, a dense memory foam mattress will provide a deep hug. This material will be excellent for side sleepers while probably not firm enough for stomach sleepers. An eco-friendly latex foam mattress is a great fit for combo sleepers since it provides bounce that will cushion a variety of positions, but it won’t provide deep pressure relief.
The tall steel coils of a traditional innerspring mattress will provide bounce, firmness, and major support for back, stomach, and heavier sleepers. Hybrid mattresses are making waves for their stellar combination of foam top-layers with coils or springs for an all-round balance of support and pressure relief, especially for back and combo sleepers. The key to a great hybrid mattress is the ideal top-layer for the sleeper, as well as the right balance of performance function.

Determine the Right Firmness – As we touched on earlier, firmness is an especially important quality in a mattress. The average back sleeper should shop for a medium firmness from level 4 to level 7, a side sleeper can shop for softer options between level 3 and level 5, and stomach sleepers will look for firmness in at least the level 6 and level 7 range to avoid sinking. Level 6.5 is widely considered the industry standard for medium firmness. An ultra-firm mattress of level 7.9 to level 10 will typically match best for stomach and heavier sleepers. Combo sleepers will find the medium-firm mattresses to hit all the right marks for many nights of blissful rest. Lighter sleepers can opt for a mattress that is 1 to 2 firmness levels lower for an ideal slumber.
